Apprenticeship Systems Programme - Apprenticeships in the Security Sector

Apprentices, upon completion of their apprenticeship in the Security Sector will be able to progress:
  • into full time employment as a security systems installer
  • onto the Advanced Apprenticeship programme
  • onto further training for supervisor/management training

This Apprenticeship programme embodies existing best practice with sufficient flexibility to meet the current and future needs of the industry. It is seen to be an effective way of ensuring that the sector has people it needs for the future. This is a significant sector of the UK economy and currently employs approximately 450 000 people. Growth within the sector is expected to be such that by the year 2006 the number of employees will be in the order of 600 - 900 000 people.

Reports in recent years have established that the security industry will continue to grow significantly in both turnover and employment terms for the foreseeable future. This has serious implications for the industry's planning of labour needs in the short and medium terms. Another important trend is the fall in unemployment, which together with recently introduced legislation will have a significant impact on recruitment and training requirements.

Assuming that these factors combine as predicated the competition for high calibre young people can only increase and could well reach the point where business growth is stifled because of skill shortages.

Against this background it is clear that for those trainees successfully completing the programme the long term employment and career prospects are excellent.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ's) provide an ideal means of ensuring that Security industry personnel are competent to perform their increasingly demanding duties. Work based assessment is a much more acceptable approach to gaining qualifications specific to the sector.
